BASILICA OF SAN FRANCESCO<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Through a walk of 10 min. you can reach the Basilica of San Francesco. Built in 1228, it houses the remains of the Saint of the City. Erected on Colle Paradiso, the first hill of hell, it is divided into a lower and upper basilica and connected to the Sacred Convent. The panorama that can be admired when arriving at the Basilica from the top of the city is worthy of note. The exterior offers a splendid overview thanks to its unique architecture with the lower square and its arcades, the upper square with the magnificent lawn and the facade with the bell tower overlooking the valley below the city. Of considerable value in the upper Basilica it is possible to admire the frescoes by Giotto that trace the life of St. Francis. The cloister of Sixtus IV behind the apse of the basilica is also worth a visit. The Eremo delle Carceri (HERMITAGE OF PRISONS) is the place where Francis retired to meditate and pray in total harmony with nature. Beautiful place with a monastery completely immersed in the woods, inside Mount Subasio. Directions on foot: cross the Piazza del Comune, take the road that climbs to the left, via San Rufino. Continue along via del Turrione and reach the Matteotti car park. Cross the car park and take the road of the same name that goes up via Eremo delle Carceri. From here you exit the walls through the Porta dei Cappuccini and there is about 4 km of uphill to be enjoyed between the panorama on the right and the nature between olive trees and pines on the left. CHURCH OF SAN DAMIANO<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Church of San Damiano, is the place where God through the famous crucifix revealed himself to Francis, telling him to repair his church. This is how Francis, not immediately understanding God’s will, sets out to repair the small church of San Damiano. Only later will he understand that by repairing my church, God meant to repair the church made up of people. Directions on foot: cross the Piazza del Comune, continue along Corso Mazzini, cross Piazza Santa Chiara and then Via Borgo Aretino, until you exit the city walls through Porta Nuova. From here go down first to the right and then immediately to the left to reach an underpass through the stairs which allows you to go down on the right the road that comes directly to the church. Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli and Porziuncola. Directions on foot: From the Piazza del Comune, first turn right into via Portica, then left into Via Giotto and then take via Fontebella. Follow this road until you reach Porta San Francesco, after which you will find yourself in the Giovanni Paolo II car park. From here you can choose whether to take the bus which also stops at the station and immediately afterwards stops in front of the Basilica of Santa Maria. Otherwise you can proceed on foot taking the stairs that descend from the parking towards Santa Maria and enter the paved road that goes straight down to take you to the Basilica of the Porziuncola.
